Formerly Granny’s Room, the colors and wall paper were a reasonable fit for Alice albeit a bit dated. Removing the wall paper revealed two tone walls in white and yellow. It seems the Onken’s wanted whoever removed the wall paper to contact them when it was removed; we’re working on it.

Of course, no room would be complete without a significant section of plaster repair.

While Alice was a fan of the pink carpet, its age was showing up in the vacuum filter after every cleaning. Eventually, there’d be nothing left anyways. So, as we’re doing throughout the house, the carpet had to go to reveal the heart pine hardwood. Once again, below the carpet we find the vinyl tile over MDF stapled extensively to the original floor. We’re lucky enough that this was the original floor throughout the house and it’s still in reasonable shape. Some patching is required but not unexpected prior to refinishing.

The vision for this included the sconces but not in their original location. Along with their relocation, we added outlets along the external wall. After removing the trim, we found old newspaper used as filler and insulation. These baseboards may have been placed sometime around 1928.

Of course, anyone who has met Alice knows there’s only one color choice for her room, pink! Getting the right shade wasn’t easy but after five different samples (which you can get for free at Lowe’s with the coupon every cashier has at their register) Once again, thanks to Valspar for the “Love Your Color Guarantee” as we had to put up the wrong color first to get it right.
Next we had to rob several zoos to get enough Flamingo’s to fill the space. Only one flamingo was harmed during the decoration of this room. Alice’s crib was transformed into a full bed and some additional sparkle was added to complete the look.
